What Gets Decided the Night Before

Nine lines is about the working limit for an evening pass, and most of them take under a minute. The point is not preparation in general. It is moving a specific set of decisions out of the twenty minutes before the opening bell, where they get made badly. The figures kept at orb trading routine richiebranson are organised the same way, one line per decision, because a routine that has to be remembered under time pressure is not a routine. Everything on the list shares one property: the answer does not change between nine at night and the cash open.

Instrument and Size, Not Direction

The two decisions worth making the night before are which instrument gets watched and how large the position will be. Neither depends on what happens after the bell. Direction does, so it stays off the list. A plan that says long QQQ tomorrow is a forecast wearing the clothes of preparation, and it will be defended in the morning against price that disagrees with it.

Size is arithmetic. Account risk per trade, an assumed stop distance based on the last few sessions of range, and a share size that falls out of the division. Doing that division at 9:25 with the premarket moving is how a position ends up twice the intended size.

What the Calendar Says

Scheduled releases change whether the session gets traded at all. A number at 8:30 and another at 10:00 are two different problems. The first sits inside premarket and has resolved before the range starts forming. The second lands in the middle of the first hour and moves price for reasons the opening range knows nothing about.

The Levels That Already Exist

Previous day high, previous day low, and the overnight high and overnight low if the instrument trades outside regular trading hours. These are fixed once the session is over, so marking them is bookkeeping rather than analysis. Drawn the night before they sit on the chart already. Drawn at 9:31 they compete with a live market for attention.

What Stays Off the List

Anything that requires the market to be open. Whether the range is wide, whether volume is heavy, whether the first breakout looks convincing. These are morning decisions with morning information. Trying anyway produces a plan that has to be abandoned, and abandoning a plan on first contact is a habit that spreads.

Why It Has to Be Written

An evening pass held in your head is not a pass. The specific failure is that a remembered decision gets revised in the morning without anyone noticing it was revised, and the record then shows a plan that was followed. Written down, a revision is visible as a revision. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why the file gets saved rather than closed.

Ten minutes, at the same time each evening. The nights it feels unnecessary are the nights it is cheapest to do, and the habit survives on those.
